Living Along the Historic Old Spanish Trail

Utah's Native American Indians Rock Art

Petroglyphs and Pictographs

The Indian Rock Art found on cliff walls throughout the San Rafael Swell and along the Old Spanish Trail, made by ancient people with something to say.

Pictographs are designs painted on the surface of rock with natural pigments. Black was made from sumac, yellow ochre, and pinyon gum which form a black powder when mixed. Yellow came from the Rabbit brush. Reds came from red ochre and roots of mountain mahogany. Some tools used were human hair, dog hair, bushes, yucca fibers, fingers, hollow bird bones filled with pigment.

Petroglyphs are designs incised, scratched, chiseled, rubbed or pecked into the surface of the rock with flint or other stone chisels and hammers.

Some of these photos are from Cubel Ranches, some are from friends.
